The origin story
Pekka's journey into photography began at the age of 15 when he stumbled upon his father's old film camera, sparking an interest during a time long before smartphones. However, Pekka quickly realized that his dad's fully automatic camera wouldn't teach him much about the fundamentals of photography. Eager to learn more, he took the camera to a friend's house, where his friend's father, a former photographer who ran a camera shop, offered him invaluable guidance.
His friend's father generously lent him one of his manual film cameras and taught him the basics of camera settings. Armed with this new knowledge, Pekka set out to experiment, capturing a variety of subjects. One of his earliest shots, an image of an apple tree in his garden, marked the beginning of his passion for photography.
In high school, some of Pekka's friends owned digital cameras (SLRs), and he often borrowed them for spontaneous photo sessions. The art class at his high school also had a camera that he could use, thanks to a supportive art teacher who encouraged creative exploration. Pekka particularly enjoyed photographing activities like snowboarding and skateboarding.
For his 16th birthday, Pekka received a Canon Eos 350D from his parents—a semi-professional camera that quickly became his constant companion. He began photographing everything, from hanging out with friends and strolling through his hometown to birthday parties and family gatherings. His passion extended to capturing snowboarding and skateboarding, inspired by the magazines and films he admired. Documenting a vibrant group of snowboarders in his hometown, Pekka eventually landed his first paid gig, photographing a snowboarding competition in 2008. As he received more invitations to cover snowboarding events across Finland, Pekka encountered challenges with payment delays due to not having a formal business. In the summer of 2009, at the age of 20, he established his own company.
The final push toward a career in photography came when Pekka traveled to New Zealand in 2009. The jaw-dropping beauty of the landscapes he captured there convinced him to fully commit to photography once he completed his marketing studies at university.
Today, Pekka is a full-time freelance photographer specializing in cinematic-style commercial and lifestyle photography. His background in marketing provides him with a unique perspective, enabling him to understand and meet the needs of his clients.
